I was four years old in 1960, the year the SCOBA Orthodox bishops’ council was formed, under ever-mounting calls (GOYA, SOYO, CEOYLA, etc.) for a North American Orthodox Synod, independent of the Old World, neither more nor less than the countries our ancestors came from. My father was 39 then, fifteen years younger than I am now. Eisenhower was president, and Queen Elizabeth of England was - still having babies.

Met. Jonah’s Words

A lot of attention was given to some remarks delivered, last Fall 2010, by His Beatitude Metropolitan Jonah, the leader of the autocephalous Orthodox Church of America. In my opinion, some of those interpretations were way off the mark. However, a few things should be said in the first place.

O Lord and Master of my life,
leave me not with the spirit of laziness,
of despair, of domination, or idle words.

Rather, give me, your servant, the spirit of integrity,
of humility, of patience, and of love.

Thus, Lord, grant me the wisdom to see my own faults,
and not condemn my brother;

for You are blessed, now and forever. Amen.


Our Father, who are in heaven,
hallowed be Your name.

Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day
our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.

but deliver us from evil.
